Mask usage training is extremely important in terms of occupational safety and worker health. In production facilities, chemical laboratories, healthcare institutions, high-risk sectors, and similar environments, new employees must be provided with mask usage training. In this way, significant steps will be taken to prevent occupational accidents.

How Should Mask Training Planning for New Employees Be Done?

Providing mask training to new employees should be planned and gradual. In this context, a proper training plan must be prepared. The following process is ideal for mask usage training planning;

Prepare Training Content Based on Risk Analysis

Respiratory protective masks serve different purposes depending on the sector in which they are used. While preparing training content for newly hired employees, environmental risks should be explained first. The types of masks to be used, selection criteria according to chemical and particulate hazards, and standards must be taught.

Especially the concept of “why we should use masks” must be understood by all employees.

Introduce Mask Types

Seal testing is mandatory for half-face and full-face protective mask models. During this training, positive pressure test, negative pressure test, and cartridge compatibility applications should be demonstrated. Thus, the protective performance of the mask will be verified.

Important Warning: Half-face and full-face respiratory masks require complete sealing between the face and the mask. Sealing cannot be achieved in individuals with beards, mustaches, or dense facial hair, and performed fit tests become invalid. Therefore, half-face and full-face masks do not provide effective respiratory protection for employees with beards or dense facial hair. Before using the mask, the facial area must be clean and shaved.

Explain Filter Usage and Replacement Periods

Filter replacement is very important in protective mask training for new employees. New employees often skip filter replacement, which becomes a serious risk factor. Filters should especially be kept away from humid environments.

Afterwards, color and odor indicators should be examined to determine filter life. In addition, filter replacement intervals must be monitored regularly.

What Should Be Considered Regarding Hygiene Rules and Storage in Protective Mask Use?

• Renewed components within mask equipment should be specifically introduced.
• Updates within standards such as EN 149 and EN 143 must be taught to all employees.
